by michaelbishop @ 31. Aug 2007 - 07:06:47 pm

Readings Ecclesiasticus 10.12-18; Jeremiah 2.4-13; Hebrews 13.1-8,15-16; Luke 14.1,7-14
Sunday Groaner
First school dayA mother greeted her little girl at the end of the first day of school: "Well, dear, how did you get on? What did they teach you today?"
"Not enough, I guess," the little girl replied. "'Cause they said I've got to go back again tomorrow."
ZooOne day Joe's mother turned to Joe's father and said," It's such a nice day, I think I'll take Joe to the zoo.""I wouldn't bother," said father. "If they want him, let them come and get him!" Shipwrecked
There were two men shipwrecked on this island. The minute they got on to the island one of them started screaming and yelling, "We're going to die! We're going to die! There's no food! No water! We're going to die!" The second man was propped up against a palm tree and acting so calmly it drove the first man crazy. "Don't you understand? We're going to DIE!"
The second man replied, "You don't understand, I make £50,000 a week."
The first man looked at him quite dumbfounded and asked, "What difference does that make? We're on an island with no food and no water! We're going to DIE!!!"The second man answered, "You just don't get it. I make £50,000 a week and I tithe ten per cent on that £50,000 a week. My pastor will find me!"

29th August -  Beheading of St John the Baptist
When you go back to work after the August Bank Holiday this month, spare a thought for John the Baptist:
however rough your local sandwich bar may be, it probably doesn’t serve you locusts with a honey dip; you won’t be imprisoned for saying derogatory things about the local MP’s wife, and even the boss from hell is unlikely to have a daughter who wants to hiphop about with your head on a platter.
John the Baptist, by our standards, had a terrible life. Yet the Bible tells us that of all the people in history, no one has even been born who was as great as him. Why? Because of the unique job God gave him to do, which has to be the best PR job of all time: act as God’s press officer.
This was quite literally the PR job from heaven: with God as his client, John the Baptist’s job was to broadcast the news that the Messiah had come. Not even Church House Westminster has ever attempted anything like that.
It always helps if PR people recognise their own clients, and the same was true of John: he was the first person to recognise Jesus as the Messiah. PR people also help their clients prepare for their public role, and John did the same for Jesus: he baptised him in the Jordan at the start of his ministry.
PR people also stand up in public for their client’s point of view, and in John’s case it led to his arrest and imprisonment. His death was finally brought about by the scheming of Herodias and Salome, and here the similarity ends: for not even Max Clifford has ever lost his head over a client

The “summer” is drawing on to autumn and many f us have moaned about the weather this year, There has been a great deal of rain and cool weather and we have repeatedly groaned. It is so easy to become grumpy and moan when things are not exactly as we would like them to be. But stop and think – just how many things do we have to be grateful for. None of us has to go hungry. We have roofs over our heads (Perhaps we have been reminded of this as some of us have been giving to help the work of the Padley Centre in Derby which gives help to the homeless and many others in need). Most of us do not have to worry about where our next meal will come from. We have lives of peace and plenty. In our area we have been spared the floods that many parts of the country have been suffering. As I write, I give thanks that we are not in the parts of the world even at this moment being threatened by hurricane and other natural disaster.

Spend a few minutes listing the things that you have to be thankful for. However badly done to, you will find that there is a surprising number of things on your list. Go through your list every day, and add to it, thanking God for all His good gifts. That will be a good preparation for the season of Harvest Thanksgiving into which we move this month. Do come along and join in our special services in our various churches.

The Padley Centre, Derby – URGENT APPEAL

Many thanks to everyone who already donates packets of soup for the Padley Centre. Our last collection of soup packets was more than gratefully received.
This Derby based Charity provides food and shelter to socially deprived people in our area but unfortunately, demand for their help has meant that their reserves are almost depleted and they are in urgent need of donations. These can be in the form of
money or food (packets or tins of soup, coffee, drinking chocolate, cereals, any tinned food, tomato and brown sauce, salad creams etc) In addition they would welcome toiletries, such as disposable razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo etc.
If you would like to help this very worthy cause, please leave gifts in Church or in the box at the front door of 1 Thatched Cottages (opposite Longford School). Many thanks in anticipation of your help.
Prayer Group
A prayer service for the local community begins at 7.30 p.m. on most Wednesdays (except the first Wednesday in each month). It follows a set service sheet and includes the opportunity to wait on God’s Holy Spirit, through a short period of quiet reflective meditation. The school holidays have just begun. Last week we had special services to mark the end of the school year and especially to offer our prayers and good wishes to those children who are moving on to new schools and indeed out into the big wide world. We can send them off with confidence. Our small church schools in these parishes will have given them a wonderful start in life and a good grounding in their education and even though there new schools are so big, we can be confident that they will soon settle in. The family atmosphere of our schools gives our children the confidence to know that they are valued as individuals and whatever their abilities they do have an important contribution to make in life in the wider world.
We need our small groups as well as the bigger ones. That is perhaps why families are so important to us. If you are one of an enormous anonymous group, then you can begin to wonder where you fit in. A family or small group of friends can allow you to find your place and value in the world.
God's love is such that we are all important as individuals. He loves you just as if there was only you to love. Even though there are countless people in the world, yet he cares for you as an individual. Wherever you go, He will be with you and nothing can separate you from his love.
Let us pray that our children may know the love of God in their lives – and that we may also share that love.
Each one of us is of infinite importance – you are so important to God that Jesus Christ died for love of you.
