All Hallows Eve
Modern Halloween celebrations have their roots with the Celtic peoples of pre-Christian times.
In those long-ago days, on the last night of October, the Celts celebrated the Festival of Samhain, or
‘Summer’s End’. The priests, or Druids, performed ceremonies to thank and honour the sun. For there was a very dark side to all this: Samhain also signalled the onset of winter, a time when it was feared that unfriendly ghosts, nature-spirits, and witches roamed the earth, creating mischief. So the Druid priests lit great bonfires and performed magic rites to ward off or appease these dark supernatural powers.
Then the Romans arrived, and brought their Harvest Festival which honoured the Goddess Pomona with gifts of apples and nuts. The two festivals slowly merged.
When Christianity arrived still later, it began to replace the Roman and Druid religions. 1 November - All Saints’ Day - was dedicated to all Christian Martyrs and Saints who had died. It was called ‘All Hallows’ Day’. The evening before became an evening of prayer and preparation and was called ‘All Hallows’ Eve’,
The Holy Evening, later shortened to ‘Halloween’.
For many centuries, however, fear of the supernatural remained strong. During the Middle Ages, animal
costumes and frightening masks were worn to ward off the evil spirits of darkness on Halloween. Magic
words and charms were used to keep away bad luck, and everybody believed that witches ride about on
broomsticks. Fortune telling was popular, and predicting the future by the use of nuts and apples was so popular that Halloween is still sometimes known as Nutcrack Night or Snap-Apple Night.
Today, Christians have learned to turn to prayer instead of charms to overcome the powers of darkness. And the deeper, true meaning of All Hallows’ Eve, should not be forgotten. As Christians, we all draw closer to Christ when we remember and give thanks for our loved ones and for others who have gone before us through the gates of death.

Sunday Groaner
My young grandson was visiting one day when he asked, "Granny, do you know how you and God are
alike?" I mentally polished my halo, while I asked, "No, how are we alike?"
"You're both so old," he replied solemnly.

St James the Least of All - October
On the perils of the Harvest Supper

The Rectory,
St. James the Least of All
My dear Nephew Darren
Plans for our Harvest Supper always start several months in advance with the traditional discussion about whether we dare increase the price of tickets by 20p to £1.50. After endless wrangling we compromise on 15p, with someone announcing that this will sound the death knell of Harvest. That every member of the committee will cheerfully go out to dinner and think nothing of shelling out £50 per head seems irrelevant.
Hot pots are provided by the ladies of the parish for the evening. It is always interesting to speculate on who has made which; some are robust and meaty, others may have had a fleeting relationship with meat, but the two long since went their own ways. Having sampled these confections over the past 30 years, I can now match each offering with the personalities of their creators. It is also amusing to watch how the cooks manoeuvre to make sure the correct people receive their own manufactures. If Mrs Ffrench ever saw Lady Masterson having a plate of her own hot pot she would never be seen in the parish again.
After the meal, we then proceed to what parishioners optimistically call the entertainment. I settle myself on the back row, smile and applaud at the appropriate points while concentrating on the large gin waiting for me back at the Rectory.
Only Colonel Hetherington imagines that the consumption of a bottle of claret over the meal improves his intonation as he gives his annual rendition of “The Lost Chord”. I can only assume the lost chords he refers to are the vocal ones he once possessed. However, most of the performance was drowned out by the ladies in the kitchen crashing crockery and cutlery and discussing the shortcomings of Mr Timmin’s new toupee.
Miss Simpson’s jokes have been repeated so often that the audience enthusiastically joins in with every punch line. This year, however, the dear lady introduced a new one. I do not wish to speculate where she heard it, but it was of a depth of blue that would have made a soldier blush. The innocent soul had no idea of its true meaning, but the audience reaction was amusing. You could sense many of the gentlemen making a mental note of it, so it could be used in after dinner speeches at the golf club. The less socially adept ladies
looked deeply shocked; those with a little more social aplomb made it appear they were wholly innocent of the implications of the joke. The most sophisticated, however made it quite clear that they understood every word, but chose not to react.
The evening always ends with the Major’s recitation of “The boy stood on the burning deck”. Fortunately, before he started an un-requested encore, I managed to get on the stage, thank all the performers for their splendid contributions and wish everyone a safe journey home. The Major was left looking like a boy who had just had his lollipop stolen by the school bully. On reflection, that is quite an accurate analogy.
Your loving uncle,
Eustace

SMILE!
The lion shall lie down with the lamb…

P T Barnum, the great showman, used to exhibit a happy family. This consisted of a lion, a tiger, a wolf, a bear and a lamb, all in one cage. "Remarkable," a visitor said one day to Mr Barnum. "Most impressive. How long have these animals dwelt together in this way?"
"Eight months," Barnum replied. "But the lamb has to be replaced occasionally."
Sunday Groaner
Sunday School teacher: "Why was Solomon the wisest man in the world?"
Little girl: "Because he had so many wives to advise him."
Moses goes to heaven
Moses died and went to heaven. God greeted him at the Pearly Gates. "Are you hungry, Moses?" asked God. "I could eat," Moses replied. So God opened a can of tuna and reached for a chunk of rye bread and they shared it.
While partaking of this humble meal, Moses looked down into hell and saw the inhabitants devouring huge steaks, briskets, pheasants, pastries and wines. Curious but deeply trusting, he remained quiet.
The next day God again invited Moses to join him for a meal. Again it was tuna and rye bread. And, again, Moses could see those denizens of hell enjoying salmon, champagne, lamb, truffles, and chocolates. Still he said nothing. But the following day, when another tin of tuna was opened, he could not contain himself any longer.
Meekly, he said: "God, I am grateful to be here in heaven with you as a reward for the pious, obedient life I led. But here in heaven all I get to eat is tuna and a piece of rye bread, and in that 'other place' they all eat like emperors and kings! I just don't understand."
God sighed. "Let's be honest," he said. "For just the two of us, does it pay to cook?"

Harvest Thanksgiving is the theme of this month. Of course, in our scattered group of parishes the season is quite prolonged lasting as it does over 5 weeks with festival services in each of our churches in turn. There is adequate opportunity for us to sing the wonderful harvest hymns to our hearts' content. Some might suggest that this prolonged period is somewhat long, but I on the other hand feel that it has much to teach us. Our thanks for all God's harvest gifts in this wonderful world can hardly be summed up in one short day. Indeed were every day of the year filled with harvest thanksgiving, then that would still not be all the thanks that we owe to God. Indeed, having offered our harvest thanksgiving we should continue every day of our lives in the way we use those gifts of God. A small token of our gratitude could be reflected not just in generosity to others less fortunate than ourselves (important though that is) but in a return to the traditional but today sadly too often neglected practice of ?saying grace? before every meal.

Make your thanksgiving last all year by doing just that. Simple prayers you might use could be:-

"Lord bless this food to our use and us to thy service for Jesus Christ's sake."

or

"Be present at our table, Lord.

Be here as everywhere adored.

Thy creatures bless, and grant that we

may feast in paradise with thee."

May all God's good gifts of harvest be yours to share

Michael Bishop

DCCPT Canon Mallender on behalf of the Trustees is most grateful to those
who sat in church to welcome the 30 visitors who were participating in the
stride/ride and to all those who encouraged his own walk, visiting the
churches from Repton to Netherseal and contributed in excess of £600 to
the Trust's funds. Including the Gift Aid refund Trusley Church's share will be
around £400.
G E Ferris Ted Ferris died on 18th August after a prolonged illness.
Though originating from Northern Ireland he spent all his working life in
Derbyshire for which he had a great love and affection. He had lived in
Trusley for 40 years with great care for his stock and for the land which he
farmed here. He contributed to the life of the village, the local farming
community and to the church where he was a sidesman for many years.
Our sympathies go to his sons Haydn and Philip and their families. Due to a
lack of space in our church for the large congregation which attended, his
funeral was held in Sutton church.
