Sunday Groaner
Hold her hand

While out in the town, I saw an elderly couple holding hands while they were walking. As they approached,
I commented on how romantic it was.
He replied, "We have been holding hands when we go out in public for over thirty years. I have to. If I let go,
she shops."

The secret of a good sermon is to have a good beginning and a good ending;
and to have the two as close together as possible. - George Burns
Be careful about reading health books. You may die of a misprint. - Mark Twain

Don't worry about avoiding temptation...as you grow older, it will avoid you. - Winston Churchill

If at first you DO succeed, try not to look astonished!

Ketchup
A woman was trying hard to get the ketchup to come out of the bottle. During her struggle the phone rang so she asked her four-year old daughter to answer it. "It's the vicar, Mum," the child said to her mother.
Then she told her caller: “Mummy can't come to the phone right now. She's hitting the bottle."

Did St Paul text the Thessalonians? Or fax the Corinthians?
The Rectory
St. James the Least
My dear Nephew Darren
No, I do not think it would be a good idea for us to correspond by your wretched ‘e-mail’ in future – as I am sure you know I do not possess an e-mail apparatus. At St. James the Least, we may well be poised to make the great leap forward into the next century, but when we do so, we shall leap forward into the nineteenth; it will be enough for future generations to give consideration to progression towards the twentieth.  Beyond  that  does not bear speculation.
Pen and ink has been the medium of choice for generations of clergy, as they should be for you too. St. Paul, may I remind you, did not send a Fax to the Corinthians - and was even proud to mention that part of his letter was written by his own hand. And while I am on the subject, it would greatly please me if you stopped using ball-point pens; they may be suitable for tradesmen, but not for a Clerk in Holy Orders. Do get yourself a good fountain pen and some permanent blue-black ink. Beware of parishioners who write to you in green  ink;  it  is  a  sure  sign  they  are   unbalanced.
Modern technology may well have a place in the commercial world,  but  it should not  impinge on the life of the Church.  Your  photocopied monthly magazine admittedly looks rather grand, but it needs a smudged cyclostyled edition to re-assure readers that this is a truly Anglican production. The sight of Miss Pemberton thumping out those  stencils on her grandfather’s typewriter, which  he  used  during  the   Crimean   campaign, running off the copies and emerging hours later liberally covered in black ink gives a re-assuring sense of continuity with the past. Seeing her days later at church, still stained with printers’ ink, makes those parishioners who don’t know the real reason,  speculate on  whether she is moonlighting as a chimney sweep.
In a similar vein,  I  despair of calls from commercial travellers trying to get me to change my photocopier to a more modern version, one that can mix me a  gin  and  tonic, and make lunch while simultaneously running off endless copies  of  irrelevant  material at frightening speed. We do not possess a photocopier and never will while I am Rector of this parish. What is wrong with carbon paper, may I ask?
When Jesus taught his disciples, did he have to wait until they all got their recorders switched on? When he told them where they were to go, did they get out their electronic diaries to see if they had a ‘window’ that day? When St. Paul wanted to check on the well-being of the Thessalonians, did he think of texting them?
I rest my case.
Your loving uncle,
Eustace

Sunday Groaner: Poor mother!
A couple were going out for the evening. They dressed carefully, called a taxi, set the lights, and put the cat out. When the taxi arrived, the couple opened the front door, and the cat shot back into the house and disappeared up the stairs. They didn't want the cat shut in the house, so the wife went out to the taxi while the husband climbed back upstairs to find the cat and put it out.
The wife was worried about some recent break-ins in their neighbourhood. She did not want it known that the house would be empty for the evening. So she explained carefully to the taxi driver: "He's just going upstairs to say goodbye to my mother."
A few minutes later, the husband got into the cab, looking out of breath. "Sorry I took so long," he said "The stupid old thing was hiding under the bed and I had to poke her with a coat hanger and grab her by the scruff of the neck to get her to come out! Then she slipped away and ran into the closet, but I quickly trapped her in the corner and got a good hold on her."
So you think God can't use you?
The next time you feel like God can't use you, just remember...
Noah was a drunk, Abraham was too old, Isaac was a daydreamer, Jacob was a liar, Leah was ugly, Joseph was abused, Moses had a stuttering problem, Gideon was afraid, Samson had long hair and was a womanizer, Rahab was a prostitute, Jeremiah and Timothy were too young, David had an affair and was a murderer, Elijah was suicidal,
Isaiah preached naked, Jonah ran from God, Naomi was a widow, Job went bankrupt,
Peter denied Christ, the Disciples fell asleep while praying, Martha worried about everything, the Samaritan woman was divorced (several times), Zacheus was too small,
Rav Sha'ul (Paul) was too religious, Timothy had an ulcer..AND - Lazarus was dead!So - what's your excuse?
In truth, God can use you to your full potential whatever your past. Why? Because you aren't the message, you are just the messenger…

We come now into the beginning of winter and th darker days of the year. Most of this month concentrates on remembering – on All Saints' Day remembering those who have gone before us in the faith – the many saints of every age including our own. We remember the great saints of old and also those less well known who have lived in our own day, but who have given shining examples of Christian faith in action. The following day is All Souls' Day when we remember all those who have died. We commend them into God's fatherly and loving care, knowing that Jesus Christ died and rose again for them and for us. We pray that they may rest in His peace. Next on Remembrance Sunday we remember all those who have died in war – especially those who died in the service of their country – whether in the two world wars or in the various conflicts and strife before and since them. We remember that even today many of our service personnel and others are in great danger as they seek to do their duty. If they are prepared to give ssom much as the price of freedom and justice, we surely must be prepared to play our part too in whatever way tha may be.

After Remembrance Sunday, the focus turns again as we begin the preparation for the season of Advent, remembering that we must one day account before God for how we live our lives. Then on the final Sunday of the Christian Year we celebrate Christ the King. Everything we do, everything we say, everywhere we go, we depend on Him and His wonderful love and must work to play our part in allowing Him to reign in our hearts and lives and to welcome Him as Lord and Saviour of all the world.

May you know his peace and joy in your heart

Michael Bishop

Children's Workshop
A Children's Workshop “Fleecy Fun” was be held on Saturday, 13
th October. Thirty-nine children joined in the 5 workshops in Sutton Village Hall based around the theme of “The Lost Sheep”. After tea, all were joined by parents to go up to church for a short service and celebration. A good time was had by all and we look forward to holding a similar event on a date to be arranged – probably in the spring. Our warmest thanks to those who worked so hard to make it such a successful and enjoyable afternoon. We will be glad to hear from anyone who would like to be involved as either a leader or participant in the next event.

The Padley Centre, Derby
Sincere thanks are extended to all those who have made their personal contributions to the recent appeal in support of the work of the Padley Group in Derby.

The generosity of local people has been outstanding and has resulted in many donations including 143 tins/packets of soup, tins of beans, peas, tomatoes, fish, potatoes, ham, spaghetti, biscuits, packets of cereals, soap tooth paste and brushes and may others.

Thankfully, through the generosity of local people, the present crisis has now eased, although it is planned to continue to offer support to the Group on an ongoing basis. Anyone wishing to continue helping out in this practical way can do so by leaving future contributions in the basket at the back of church. The church is normally open during daylight hours.

Prayer Group

A prayer service for the local community begins at 7.30 p.m. on most Wednesdays (except the first Wednesday in each month). It follows a set service sheet and includes the opportunity to wait on God’s Holy Spirit, through a short period of quiet reflective meditation.
