On the delights of the parish jumble sale
            The Rectory
            St. James the Least
My dear Nephew Darren
The estimate for re-hanging the bells in our church tower came as something of a shock. The church council discussed fund-raising at length. Someone suggested selling part of the Rectory garden for building, another for getting 200 parishioners to loan £1,000 each, interest-free. Mrs Ffrench suggested holding a jumble sale. The jumble sale won - mainly because it gives everyone an opportunity to see what their neighbours think of as junk.
Expensive articles are brought with an ostentatious show of modesty when everyone is together, sorting donations. Genuine rubbish, such as black and white televisions that broke 20 years ago and cardigans with holes at the elbows are left at the church hall doors in the dead of night.
Before the doors opened, all the helpers were assembled behind piles of clothing, which had they collapsed would have smothered half the congregation. I was unable to see little Miss Faversham, who rarely misses these opportunities to kit herself out with another year's wardrobe. Someone pointed to one table and told me she was in men's clothing. I always had my suspicions.    Once the doors were opened and customers poured in, I got a better appreciation of how the Italians must have felt when they saw Hannibal with his elephants pouring down the sides of the Alps. That is when the mettle of our ladies really shows, haggling over whether something worth £10 goes for 10 or 11p. Those used to riding with hounds seem best able to control the crowds - even if they occasionally tend to regard the customers as the fox.
As it happened, the youth club were going pot-holing that day, so most of the teenagers bought complete sets of clothing for 10p which could then be discarded afterwards. I wondered what their caving instructor would think of teenagers arriving dressed in dinner jackets and tweed skirts.
Two days of preparation leads to a battle that is over in less than an hour and we emerge bloodied but unbowed, home for a bath, in the knowledge that the first step to saving the bells has been taken. Only another 2,500 jumble sales and we shall have reached our target. The day was slightly marred when I crossed the church hall car park to see a note stuck on to my car: "Sold - to be collected later".

How to make your wife more efficient
An efficiency expert was delivering a seminar on time management for a company's junior executives. He concluded the session with a disclaimer: "But whatever you do, do NOT attempt these task-organizing tips at home," he said.
"Why not?" he was asked.
"Well, I did a study of my wife's routine of fixing breakfast," he replied, a little embarrassed. "I noticed she made a lot of trips between the refrigerator and the stove, the table and the cabinets, each time carrying only
one item. So I told her: “Darling you are making too many trips back and forth carrying one item at a time. If you would only try carrying several things at once you would be much more efficient.'" He paused.
"Did that save time?" one of the executives asked.
"Actually, yes," the expert answered, "It used to take her 20 minutes to fix my breakfast. Now I get my own in seven minutes."

Sunday Groaner - Another miracle
A priest was speeding down a motorway when he was stopped by the police. The officer smelled alcohol on his breath, and then saw the empty wine bottle on the floor of the car.
“Sir,” he demanded, “Have you been drinking?”
“Just water,” says the priest.
“Then why,” said the officer, “do I smell wine?”
The priest thought rapidly. “Good Lord!” he cried. “He’s done it again!”
The fight
A man rushed into the pub. “I need a pint – I’ve just had another fight with my wife.”
“Oh, yes?” asked his friend at the bar. “And how did this one end?”
“Well, when it was over, she was on her hands and knees, pleading with me” admitted the man.
“Goodness! What she very upset?”
“Yes, I’m afraid so,” said the man, “She kept crying: ‘come out from under that bed, you big chicken, and
let me get my hands on you…!’”

St James the Least of All
On church tourists and outrageous lies

The Rectory
St. James the Least
My dear Nephew Darren
I was sorry to hear of the dawn call by the police because your church had been broken into, although the theft of tambourines, overhead projector acetates of choruses and banners proclaiming "Jesus wants me for a Sunbeam" are likely to have a limited market. But you are fortunate that those are the only unexpected callouts you receive. Those of us with ancient churches are resigned to receiving telephone calls from people living in remote corners of the globe who happen to be on holiday in England and want to trace long-lost relatives who were married or buried in our parishes. They invariably seem amazed when they find you are not personally familiar with someone who died 400 years ago, what family still exists, where they live and what interesting anecdotes you know about their ancestors - preferably something criminal. Any attempts to put them off will be deflected by being told that they fly home tomorrow and since they are booked at a show in London that evening, could they come round early afternoon?
Once inside the church, they will expect a conducted tour. I have a competition with myself to see how outrageous I can make our history, yet still be believed. One family now thinks that the conical tomb in the churchyard is the last visible tip of the spire of the famous cathedral which once stood on this spot but sank into the ground when cursed by a bride who was jilted at its altar. A second couple now know that a locked safe contains a set of pagan gods which were worshipped by an obscure sect in the parish during the time of the Tudor monarchs. They were removed by the incumbent of the day and locked away. Only the Rector is allowed a key and is only permitted to look inside at the contents on the day he leaves office, as the sight is too terrible.
Yet another are convinced that several dozen mediaeval gold chalices are buried in the rectory garden, where they were hidden from Cromwell's soldiers and their exact location has been forgotten (I told that story when I was looking for volunteers to dig over the rose beds).
Should they get as far as the vestry to inspect the registers of baptisms, marriages and burials, you know that the afternoon is lost. It can occasionally hasten their departure by casually telling them to ignore the mice which will be running round the floor - although hardened visitors are likely to set up their tripods to catch
them on film.
The ultimate deterrent is to suggest they stay to Evensong which I am about to say. That is guaranteed to
remind them that they have an urgent appointment back at their hotel.
Your loving uncle,
Eustace

We had a very large congregation for our special service at Sutton to mark the launch of the Mission and Ministry Area covering the 8 parishes of this benefice together with the 7 parishes of the South Dales group of parishes. The hope is that we can find ways of working together to forward the mission and work of the church in all our parishes. Thank you to those who contributed to the retiring collection in aid of the Burma Cyclone Appeal. A total of £465 was raised.
At the end of this month a very important event for the mission of the church takes place: the ordination of new priests and deacons . This year we have a particularly special interest in this:- on Sunday, 29
th June (St Peter's day) the ordination of deacons will take place in Derby Cathedral at (I believe) 10.45a.m.. Amongst those being ordained will be Joe Cant who is to serve as Assistant Curate in the parishes of the Longford Deanery. Initially he will be working in the parish of Hilton with Marston but will then be spending time in the various benefices and parishes of the deanery to both gain experience in various aspects and styles of the church's life in our area and to play his part in the church's mission to all who live in our parishes. We will be formally welcoming him to this benefice at the united service scheduled to take place on 31st August. Full details of this will be available soon. In the meantime, please pray for Joe and his family as they move into the area and as Joe begins his ministry amongst us – and especially as he is ordained on 29th June.
In order to allow those who are able to do so to attend the ordination service in the cathedral, there will be NO morning service in any of our parishes on 29
th June. There will be a United service of Holy Communion at 6.45p.m. at All Saints', Trusley on that evening.

Those wish to attend the ordination are welcome to do so at 10.45a.m. in the Cathedral: - but do note that the cathedral is likely to be very full for the occasion, so those attending would be wise to arrive early, especially as there will naturally be sure to be some seats reserved for the families and special guests of those being ordained.

Do, please pray for all who are called to serve in the sacred ministry – we need more priests and deacons to serve and minister to God's people. This is a time to especially think about what God is calling you to do. Is he calling you or someone you know to either ordained or licensed lay ministry or to some other form of ministry. If the work of the church is to go forward in this and future generations, then we need to play our part in discerning who are to be the deacons, priests bishops, readers and others to do God's work. In his vision, Isaiah as he prayed heard the voice asking “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us” Isaiah responded in astonishment “Is it I, Lord?” He initially thought he was far too sinful to even think of responding to the call – but then his vision made him respond to the call positively: “Here am I, send me.”

What is God's call to you in your life today?
