... Would the opening verses of Genesis read:
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was without form and void. And darkness was upon the face of the deep. And God said ‘Let there be light’. And there was light. And God hesitated and said ‘Could I just see the darkness again please?’”Old lady to Vicar who was leaving the parish. “I’m so sorry you are going. I have enjoyed your sermons so much. 15 July St Swithun - saint for a rainy day
St Swithun is apparently the saint you can blame for rainy summers. It is said that if it rains on his special day, 15 July, it will then rain for forty days after that.It all began when he was made Bishop of Winchester in 852 by King Ethelwulf of Wessex. It was an important posting: Winchester was the capital of Wessex, and during the 10 years Swithun was there, Wessex became the most important kingdom of England.During his life, instead of washing out people’s summer holidays, and damping down their spirits, Swithun seems to have done a lot of good. He was famous for his charitable gifts and for his energy in getting churches built. When he was dying in 862, he asked that he be buried in the cemetery of the Old Minster, just outside the west door.
If he has been left there in peace, who knows how many rainy summers the English may have been spared over the last 1000 years. But, no, it was decided to move Swithun. By now, the 960s, Winchester had become the first monastic cathedral chapter in England, and the newly installed monks wanted Swithun in the cathedral with them. So finally, on 15 July 971, his bones were dug up and Swithun was translated into the cathedral.
That same day many people claimed to have had miraculous cures. Certainly everyone got wet, for the heavens opened. The unusually heavy rain that day, and on the days following, was attributed to the power of St Swithun.
“Dear Vicar...
- I know God loves everybody but then he never met my sister. Yours sincerely, Arnold. Age 8.
- Please say in your sermon that Peter Peterson has been a good boy all week. I am Peter Peterson.
Sincerely, Pete. Age 9.
- My father should be a minister. Every day he gives us a sermon about something. Robert , age 11.
- I'm sorry I can't leave more money in the plate, but my father didn't give me a raise in my pocket money. Could you have a sermon about a raise in my pocket money? Love, Patty. Age 10.I would like to go to heaven someday because I know my brother won't be there. Stephen. Age 8.

How to make your wife more efficient
An efficiency expert was delivering a seminar on time management for a company's junior executives. He concluded the session with a disclaimer: "But whatever you do, do NOT attempt these task-organizing tips at home," he said.
"Why not?" he was asked.
"Well, I did a study of my wife's routine of fixing breakfast," he replied, a little embarrassed. "I noticed she made a lot of trips between the refrigerator and the stove, the table and the cabinets, each time carrying only
one item. So I told her: “Darling you are making too many trips back and forth carrying one item at a time. If you would only try carrying several things at once you would be much more efficient.'" He paused.
"Did that save time?" one of the executives asked.
"Actually, yes," the expert answered, "It used to take her 20 minutes to fix my breakfast. Now I get my own in seven minutes."
Noah opened up the ark and let all the animals out, telling them to "Go forth and multiply!" He began to close the great doors of the ark when he noticed that there were two snakes still sitting in a dark corner. Concerned, he said to them: "Didn't you hear me? You can go now. Go forth and multiply."
"We can't," said the snakes sadly. "We're adders."

That was the advertising sign which used to be prominently shown at this time of year outside a shop in Nottingham years ago. What was it advertising? Gas mantles for gas lighting. It was a reminder that even though it was still the middle of summer, yet customers needed to prepare for the darker days of next winter.
Our schools will later this month begin their summer break and so teachers and children will be reviewing what progress they have made in the past school year. For some it will be an exciting time as they move on to new schools and new challenges. We wish well to those children and teachers who will be leaving the schools in our parishes for pastures new. We should also be praying for those who are preparing for the autumn when they will be coming to our schools.
What changes are happening in your life at present? Are you preparing for a new phase of your life whether it be a new school, a new job, a new home or even a new life of leisure as retirement looms. Times of change or transition can be anxious times. Perhaps you, or someone you know is full of foreboding about what the future will bring. If so, be assured that whatever change and confusion may surround you, yet there is one on whom you can rely – wherever you go, whatever you do, God is ready to go with you, guarding you and leading you – showing you his way forward for you. Pray that you and every one of us may know his presnce in all that we do and wherever we go.
God bless as you go forward today on the first day of the rest of your life. May you know his presence with you.

HELP!
I am trying to trace an aunt who was born in Boylestone in 1916 and lived there certainly up to 1931. Her name was Eliza Morley, and she lived with her grandparents William and Louisa Ann Morley at The Myers, Boylestone. William, a farmer, died in 1931 and was buried in the St John’s church yard. In his will he was generous to Eliza in gratitude for her “considerable help with my farm in my later years”.
I have not been able to find a record for either a marriage or a death of Eliza Morley, so if anyone in the village can shed any light on what happened to her after William’s death, I would be extremely happy to hear from them. Any information, however insignificant you may think it is, will be appreciated. Thank you.
