SUNDAY GROANER
Grace

The elderly visiting minister turned to the little boy: "Now, James, tell me frankly, do you say prayers before eating?" "No, I never bother,” little James replied scornfully. “I don't have to. My mum is a good cook."
Practice makes perfect
A little girl was sitting on her grandfather's lap as he read her a bed-time story. From time to time, she reached up to touch his wrinkled cheek. Then she would stroke her own cheek. Finally she interrupted:
"Grand-dad, did God make you?"
"Yes, dear," he answered, "God made me a long time ago."
"Oh," she paused, "Grand-dad, did God make me too?"
"Yes, indeed, dear," he said, "God made you just a little while ago."
Feeling their respective faces again, she observed, "God's getting better at it, isn't he ?"

Sunday Groaner:
Some miscellaneous observations on modern life...
* Fools rush in where fools have been before.
* It's called ‘take home’ pay because you can't afford to go anywhere else with it.
* Success is relative - the greater the success, the more relatives.
* If at first you succeed, try to hide your astonishment.
* You must have learned from others' mistakes. You haven't had time to think all those up yourself.
* People like criticism - just keep it positive and flattering.
* It's okay to let your mind go blank, but please turn off the sound.
* Worry kills more people than work because more people worry than work.
* Middle age is when broadness of the mind and narrowness of the waist change places.
* When you're getting kicked from behind, that means you're in front.
* Misers aren't much fun to live with, but they make great ancestors.
* Opportunities always look bigger going than coming.
*The real reason you can't take it with you is that it goes before you do.
*Junk is something you throw away three weeks before you need it.
* Hospitality is making your guests feel at home, even if you wish they were.
* The world is full of willing people - some willing to work and some willing to let them.
*Some people are like blisters. They don't show up until the work is done.
* A babysitter is a teenager acting like an adult while the adults are out acting like teen-agers.
* Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than going to a garage makes you a mechanic.
* Experience is a wonderful thing. It enables you to recognise a mistake when you make it again.
* The one who snores will fall asleep first.
Out of the ark
Noah opened up the ark and let all the animals out, telling them to "Go forth and multiply!" He began to close the great doors of the ark when he noticed that there were two snakes still sitting in a dark corner.
Concerned, he said to them: "Didn't you hear me? You can go now. Go forth and multiply."
"We can't," said the snakes sadly. "We're adders."
Musings on modern life:
Shocking

On a bus a man gave his seat to a woman. She fainted. On recovering, she thanked him. Then he fainted.
The ultimate critic
The newspapers report how a cinema goer arose from his seat while watching a film and shot himself. I believe that I have also seen that picture.
When talking about your faith….. “Make sure it is God’s trumpet you are blowing – if it is only yours it won’t wake the dead, it will simply disturb the neighbours. W Ian Thomas
God does not keep office hours. A W Tozer
Summer sales: Much trouble is caused by our yearnings getting ahead of our earnings. Anon
When praying, don't give God instructions - just report for duty.
As summer continues… This church is prayer-conditioned.

What am I?

A teacher gave her young class a lesson on the magnet and what it does. The next day in a short written test, she included this question: "My full name has six letters. The first one is M. I am strong and attractive. I pick up lots of things. What am I?"
When the papers were turned in, the teacher was astonished to find that more than half her pupils had answered the question with the word: "Mother."

Body parts

A doctor in our village surgery often plays a game with his younger patients to put them at ease, and to test their knowledge of body parts. And so it was that one day, while pointing to my young son’s ear, the doctor asked him solemnly, "Is this your nose?"
Alarmed, my son glanced over to me and said softly: "Mum, I think we'd better find a new doctor!"

August is here once again. Many people look forwasrd to this as the month for holidays and a time away from it all – we hope accompanied by some real summer weather. For others it is a time of lots of work connected with harvest. Whatever you are doing, remember that all you do is under the continuing love and care of God. If you have the chance to take a break from the regular pattern of your life, then stop and look at the wonderful world around you that God has provided. He wants us to take the chance of appreciating it – and not to be so busy with the worries and troubles of daily life that we hardly see his gifts. As the poet put it, “What is this life, if full of care, we have no time to stand and stare?”
Take time this month to stand and stare, to stop and look at all that is around you. Ask God to help you to appreciate his gifts and use them wisely.
At the end of this month, on 31
st August, we will be having an “away-day” - there will be just one Sunday service on that day and it will be at 10.30a.m. in the little former parish church of St. Chad, Barton Blount – a rare opportunity for us to worship in that lovely place. On that occasion, as well as welcoming congregations from the 8 parish churches of the benefice and members of the local Methodist Churches, we will also have the opportunity of welcoming Rev. Joe Cant who was ordained deacon in Derby Cathedral last month to serve as Deanery Curate in the Longford Deanery. This will be his first visit to a service in our parishes, so I hope that all will make a special effort to be there to welcome him. In coming months he will be spending time working in various parishes of the deanery. Please pray for Joe and his family as they settle into their new life amongst us.
