The first signs of spring were to be seen even in the early days of January this year when in Church Broughton churchyard the snowdrops began to bloom and there were even some primroses flowering in sheltered spots. We will be looking this month to lengthening days and we hope some signs of spring weather. Traditionally 14th February (St Valentine's day) is said to be when the birds choose their mates. That day is always special to me because it was the day on which I was confirmed as a member of the church (Can it really be 49 years ago?!)
As we look to signs of new growth, it is the time for us to see how we are growing ? in faith and hope. Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, the season in which we are called to examine their lives and look to how we can grow in our Christian lives falls this month. Look out for details of our Lenten meetings. Think how you plan to use Lent this year. Whether we are new in our faith or growing old in it, still there is time for us to learn more and to put our faith into practice. All of us need to stop and think how is God calling us to serve him in this year which he has given us. We must pray that He will help us to follow where He leads.
A happy Lent and spring growing time to you.
Michael Bishop
