    When Insults Had Class

These glorious insults are from an era before the English language got boiled down to four-letter words and a “you”:

The exchange between Churchill & Lady Astor: She said, "If you were my husband I'd give you poison." He said, "If you were my wife, I'd drink it."

"He had delusions of adequacy." - Walter Kerr

"He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire." – Winston Churchill
"I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure." Clarence Darrow

“He has never been known to use a word that might send a reader to the dictionary." - William Faulkner (about Ernest Hemingway).

"Thank you for sending me a copy of your book; I'll waste no time reading it." - Moses Hadas

"I didn't attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it." - Mark Twain

"He has no enemies, but is intensely disliked by his friends." - Oscar Wilde

"I am enclosing two tickets to the first night of my new play; bring a friend.... if you have one." - George Bernard Shaw to Winston Churchill

"Cannot possibly attend first night, will attend second... if there is one." - Winston Churchill, in response.

"I feel so miserable without you; it's almost like having you here." - Stephen Bishop

    Feel sorry for their teachers....
TEACHER: Maria, go to the map and find North America.
    MARIA: Here it is.
TEACHER: Correct. Now class, who discovered America ?
    CLASS: Maria.

TEACHER: John, how do you spell 'crocodile?'
    JOHN: K-R-O-K-O-D-I-A-L'
    TEACHER: No, that's wrong
JOHN: Maybe it is wrong, but you asked me how I spell it.

    Arrested

It was the end of the day when ;the policeman  parked his police van in front of the station. As he gathered his equipment, his  K-9 partner, Jake, was barking, and he saw a little boy on the pavement staring in at him. “Is that a dog you got back there?” he asked.
    “It sure is,” he replied.
Wide-eyed, the boy looked at him and then towards the back of the van. Finally he ventured: “What'd he do, then?”

    Six items

I was in the express lane at the store quietly fuming. Completely ignoring the sign, the woman ahead of me had slipped into the checkout line pushing a cart piled high with groceries. Imagine my delight when the cashier beckoned the woman to come forward, looked into the cart and asked sweetly, "So which six items would you like to buy?"
